747 Spectacular: Comparison

Having flown three different airlines first class products on their 747’s in a relatively short period, I thought it would make sense to offer a ranking of how they stack up in various areas.

In Flight Entertainment

1. British Airways

2. Singapore

3. Lufthansa

British not only has by far the best movie selection, but their screen seems to be at least 1.5x as big as SQ’s screen on the skysuite product and obviously Lufthansa’s ancient and tiny screen is not in the running. LH also has a very sorry selection of movies.

Seat Comfort

1. British Airways

2. Singapore

3. Lufthansa

BA’s New First, especially seat 2A is an exceptionally long product, wide, and very comfortable. I really wish Singapore had an ottoman, but their skysuite still nudges out Lufthansa due to a slightly greater degree of privacy. I still sleep will on the Lufthansa product and enjoy it, but it is a bit behind the others.

Food Quality

1. Lufthansa

2. Singapore

3. British Airways

Lufthansa knocked this one out of the park, there is a HUGE gap between #1 and #2 on this list. British Airways food is nothing to write home about. Given their quality hard product and (often) great crews, they should really look to up their game in this area and bring their overall product to a higher level.

Crews

1. Lufthansa

2. British Airways

3. Singapore

Again, a huge gap between #1 and #2 here. You really do win with people and Lufthansa’s crews were above and beyond. British Airways are very friendly, but can spend a bit too much time absent. This last flight with Singapore, it felt like the crew didn’t want to be there and was a very disappointing experience.

Overall

1. Lufthansa

2. British Airways

3. Singapore

I have a heard time believing it came out this way myself. The huge lead Lufthansa holds in food and crew service makes them the clear cut #1 for me. Yes the IFE isn’t great, but I still found a movie to watch and while the seat was the worst of the 3, it still allowed me to get plenty of restful and comfortable sleep. BA’s hard product is the best of the three, but they need to improve on their awful food and inject a little more personality into their crews. Singapore…well let’s just say I don’t think I will be going out of my way to fly with SQ anymore. The skysuite is a nice product and they have very good food but their ground operations are a disaster, the in-flight service was not even close to up to par and everything about their 747 cabin interiors is starting to look scuffed and tired. Congrats to Lufthansa for winning the November/December 747 Challenge! Sadly…you have earned nothing but my future repeat business.
